Karl Adolph Gjellerup, recipient of the 1917 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Roholte, Denmark. His father, a parson, died when he was three, and he was reared by a cousin, Johannes Fibiger. He was educated at the University of Copenhagen where he studied theology. He later renounced the Christian faith and was influenced by Asian religions. His early literary success allowed him to devote all of his time to writing.
Gjellerup's first book, EN IDEALIST SHILDRING AF EPIGONUS (AN IDEALIST, A DESCRIPTION OF EPIGONUS), was published when he was 22. He achieved literary success with his 1884 publication, BRYNHILD.
Karl Gjellerup died in Klotzsche, Germany in 1919.
